Lauren Forrest, from Mulroy College in Milford, has become the second winner of the Enabling Access Across Generations Transition Year Student Awards. This national awards programme is run by the Local Authority Access Officers Network and the National Disability Authority (NDA).
One of the NDA’s objectives is to promote positive attitudes towards people with disabilities. This Transition Year programme is an example of such an initiative aimed at a group that may not have had the opportunity to think about this issue before.
Participating students complete the NDA’s Disability Equality online training module to help them to prepare to deal with people with disabilities during their transition year work experience. Students also take part in an art competition to demonstrate what they have learned through the online training.
Hundreds of students have completed the online training module over the past two years.
