Mulroy College has in place a “Mentoring Programme” where senior students are trained in how to assist younger students cope with the demands of a new school.
This programme has been very successful in the college and a real support to first year students. Senior Prefects attend 1st,2nd & 3rd year registration classes where they link in with and support students.
Mulroy College Student Mentoring
Mulroy College operates a student peer mentoring program. This is where older and more experienced senior students are paired with younger students to support, encourage and help them settle into secondary school.
It is led by our senior student leadership team and supports our junior students as they begin secondary school and continues until they reach third year.
Each 1st, 2nd and 3rd Year class is supported by two senior prefects. They are present on the students first day of school and attend morning registration on a regular basis throughout the school year. They are available to speak with individual or groups of students during break times and at pre-arranged times during the school day.
Our student leadership team undertakes peer mentor training prior to beginning their work with our Junior students. They receive information on listening, problem solving, helping and communication skills and use these to support and encourage our junior students.
While many students go to their class teacher when they encounter difficulties, some students feel more comfortable speaking with older students when they have worries or issues in school. The peer mentors listen to and offer solutions. They are also a link person between the students and the class teacher.
Mulroy College organises a First Year Friendship Day during September each year. This whole day event allows our student mentors to get to know the young people in their class and help our 1st Year students make friends and participate in school activities.
