Understanding the Leaving Certificate Exam and Assessment Modes
The Leaving Certificate is the final examination of the Irish secondary school system, taken by students in their final year of post-primary education. It serves as a milestone, determining entry into third-level education, apprenticeships, and employment opportunities.
The assessment methods used in the Leaving Certificate have evolved to accommodate a diverse range of learning styles and aptitudes, ensuring a fair evaluation of students’ abilities.
Structure of the Leaving Certificate
Students typically take six to eight subjects, with their top six results being counted for CAO (Central Applications Office) points. Subjects are offered at different levels—Higher, Ordinary, and Foundation (available in some subjects, such as Mathematics and Irish). Each subject is assessed individually, contributing to the overall results that influence university admissions and career paths.

Assessment Modes
The Leaving Certificate uses a combination of assessment methods to evaluate student performance:
- Written Examinations The traditional form of assessment, written exams take place in June and typically feature essays, short-answer questions, and problem-solving exercises. These exams remain a core component of the Leaving Certificate across most subjects.
- Practical and Project Work Many subjects, such as Art, Music, Engineering, and Technology, include practical assessments or project submissions. These components allow students to demonstrate their skills in a hands-on manner and are usually completed during the school year.
- Oral and Aural Examinations Language subjects, including Irish, French, Spanish, and German, incorporate oral and aural components to assess students’ speaking and listening skills. These exams are conducted before the written exams and contribute significantly to the overall grade.
- Coursework and Continuous Assessment Some subjects, such as History and Geography, require students to complete research projects known as the Leaving Certificate Subject Projects or Geographical Investigations. These assignments are completed during the academic year and submitted for external assessment.
